As Co-Founder and Former Captain of The Spence School’s FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Team, I lead my team to design, build, and program our award-winning robot for the Power Play Competition. Mecanum wheels allow for a holonomic drive. The extrusion channel lift system places hollow cones through poles of various heights. The claw inserts itself inside the cone and then expands to apply ample pressure to the cone’s inner walls, which reliably prohibits slipping. In order to release the cone onto the pole, the claw contracts. Later on, we improved upon our initial design (Image 1) by designing a custom part using CAD (Image 3) that efficiently funnels a cone exactly under the claw. Additionally, we added a color sensor for the Autonomous portion of the competition in order for our robot to park in a certain area based on the color detected. The final robot is shown in Image 2.
